Aircraft conceptual design using multidisciplinary optimization

Abstract: This paper presents an integrated approach to aircraft conceptual and preliminary design utilizing multiple software tools and packages integrated into a comprehensive environment, enabling multidisciplinary optimization. The goal of this approach is an increase in quality of obtained solutions, as well as significant increase in the speed of performing early aerodynamic, structural and stability and control analysis of an aircraft configuration. This method integrates multiple existing engineering software packages for computer-aided design, computational fluid dynamics, structural analysis, etc. using various scripts, macros and additional functions to enable control of the analysis process, evaluation of the results and modification of design parameters via Matlab, to perform the optimization by varying design parameters. A brief example is given, optimizing a proposed COIN aircraft wing.
