Abstract: Chemical sensors, based on Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) technology, are widely used in detection of parameters in the environments where toxic and explosive materials are stored. These sensors are of great interest as chemical sensors, for detection of explosive compounds, because they may be designed to respond selectively to analytes of interest. SAW devices are very sensitive and have low detection limits, high dynamic range and can be easily adapted to various gas or vapor detection. Advantage of SAW sensors, over other sensors, is that they are passive elements and that the detected data can be transmitted wirelessly. Several polymers have been used, as sensing layer, especially, to detect nitroaromatic explosives such as 2,4 DNT, 2,4,6 TNT. Nitroaromatic SAW sensing devices have been made with carbowax and siloxan polymers. This paper gives an overview of the possible sensing layers and the estimation of SAW sensors parameters, based on the simple and useful method of the of chemical gas sensors modelling. The method used is based on the electrical equivalent circuit of the SAW sensor. The method is very efficient and can be used for the optimal design of chemical sensors.

Key words: SAW filter, chemical sensors, explosives, polymer layer, modelling.
