Abstract: An analytical procedure to choose the optimal stacking sequence based on maximum load carrying capacity and ‘first-ply-failure’ (FPF) concept of fiber reinforced laminates is described. The term ‘conditionally’ means that the choice is made among stacking sequences that are defined in advance. For the given load conditions, the carrying capacity of each stacking sequence is found based on the specific failure criterion. Then, all analyzed stacking sequences are arranged in carrying capacities falling order. The optimal stacking sequence is one that is on the top. It is explained and shown on the examples how the choice of the failure criterion as well as the load conditions influence the optimal stacking sequence. The described procedure is very useful in the preliminary sizing, for example, of the flight vehicle’s wing skin or spar web.

Key words: composite material, stacking sequence, strength, failure criterion, ranking.
