TOPINS-SOFTWARE SOLUTION FOR MEASURING OPTICAL DISTORTION

Abstract: Optical characteristic measurements have become very important for modern aircraft transparencies. Halation (haze, scatter, and glare), crazing, birefringence, reflections, distortion and angular deviation are of extreme importance for the aircraft equipped with Head-Up Displays (HUD). HUD may require stringent control over the optics of the portion of the transparency (windscreen or canopy) which lies between the HUD combining glass and the external environment. In this paper we describe software solution for automatic measuring distortion for aircraft transparencies. Measurement of angular deviation/distortion is calculated in accordance to ASTM Standard Method (ASTM F 733 – 90). This solution has been tested and successfully verified on the example of the airplane GALEB G-4 windshield and canopy.
