Abstract: This paper deals with technologies and methods of structural health monitoring and their application to aircraft structures. Two methods are presented in detail. The first one is based on changes of frequency response, which occurs as a result of the mass and rigidity changes due to the structural damages. The second one is based on changes of wave propagation. Some examples of structural health monitoring applications in civil airplanes are given. The main shortcomings of existing SHM systems have also pointed out
