Abstract: Specialized GIS applications, as we call them in this paper, are developed by applying GIS to other domains. Within these applications GIS offers context for visualization and analyses of domain specific data, and it is extended with domain specific functionalities. In this paper general architecture and main functionalities of Desktop GIS Universal Military System - specialized GIS application for military domain is presented. Developed system architecture is flexible, extendible and partly plug-in based. The system supports all basic GIS functionalities: various coordinate systems support, raster and vector layers management, map navigation (zooming, panning, snapping, selection), layer style management, data querying, working with different kinds of data sources (database, SHAPE file) etc. Most important specialized functionalities of this system are: tools for geospatial analysis, situation maps management according to the MIL-STD 2525C standard, support for TCP/UDP communication between users and 3D view of terrain. Implemented geospatial analysis include the following: length and area measurement on the map, coordinate conversions, flooding analysis, terrain profile analysis and optical visibility analysis. Situation maps management offers necessary symbols and graphics primitives for graphical presentations of combat engagement scenarios as well as creation of new military symbol templates. TCP/UDP communication supports exchanging short messages and situation map files. 3D view of terrain enables continuous movement through 3D virtual environment with real time level of data (LOD) management.
