Abstract: In this paper we will present our research in the area of Web Geo-Information Systems (Web GIS) and their usage in the field of defense and security. One of the results of our research is GinisWeb framework. This framework is used for the development of Web GIS applications. Also, we have developed a Web GIS client’s surrounding architecture. The architecture which surrounds Web GIS clients developed using GinisWeb framework is based on Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) principles. Further, our architecture is based on the usage of the authorized access to geo-data services. Geo-data is provided to Web GIS clients through operations of Web services developed according to Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards. In particular, our architecture relies on the usage of Web Map Services (WMS) and Web Feature Services (WFS) which are integrated into a unique geo-data provider – GVS Server. GVS Server extends WMS and WFS services with user authentication capabilities. This is achieved through a custom user authorization service which is an integral part of the GVS Service. Since the communication between Web GIS clients and GVS server is authorized, the usage of user authorization service transforms standard WMS and WFS into authorized WMS and WFS. Once the Web GIS user is authorized, its privileges will determine the data that will be acquired from GVS Server and visualized within GinisWeb Web GIS clients. Moreover, Web GIS clients developed using GinisWeb framework will adjust their interface according to available data sets. Presented characteristics make GinisWeb framework and its surrounding architecture capable of supporting the development of Web GIS clients suitable for use in the field of defense and security
