Abstract: Mobile GIS applications for fieldwork become crucial for delivering geo-spatial data in the field. Possibility of two-way communication between teams in the field and experts within operation center is the key functionality for this type of mobile GIS applications. Situational maps are commonly used to obtain field team’s current location and geometry and qualitative data considering objects in the field. Presented mobile GIS application is a part of the enterprise GIS solution for defense and security agencies developed in the CG&GIS laboratory of Electronic Faculty in Niš. The robust architecture and design of this application enable online and offline modes of operation. The offline mode is provided by situation map files while the online mode is supported through the use of appropriate Web services. Since mobile GIS application is not primary focus of field personnel, special attention was paid to workflow optimization in order to leverage their situation awareness and support their primary duties.
