Abstract: A model of a training artillery sub-caliber projectile with a conical tail section was tested in the T-38 blowdown wind tunnel of the Military Technical Institute, Belgrade. The model was tested in Mach number range up to 4. A prototype of a new very stiff six-component wind tunnel balance of simple construction was used with semiconductor strain gauges on the axial-load element. Also, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) calculations were performed using FLUENT software package to predict aerodynamic coefficients. Wind tunnel test and CFD results of the axial force coefficient were compared, as the axial force evaluation was the main request during the design process of the projectile. A very good agreement between the compared results was obtained. Photos of visualized flow field around model using schlieren method and corresponding computed images obtained from FLUENT were also compared.
