GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS AND DEVELOPMENT OF INTERMETALLIC COMPOUNDS

Intermetallic compunds have been recognized as potentially useful group of high temperature materials. Intermetallic compounds possess excellent oxidation resistance at high temperature, good high-temperature strength as well as lower density in comparison to many temperature materials. Specific properties of ordered intermetallic compounds attracted the attention of aerospace and aircraft researchers seeking for candidate materials of a new generation. Intermetallic compounds are also considered as material which could yield the appropriate balance of properties between superalloys and ceramics. The processing of intermetallic compounds inculde both powder metallurgy and standard melting and casting processes.
