IGNITION OF PROPELLANT CHARGES

Abstract
The scope of this scientific-technical information is experimental the
research of two-phase flow of granular propellant and propellant gases in
the gun bore during interior the ballistic cycle. The survey of
existing devices for study of flamespreading through propellant charge, with
their basic characteristics, is given. The study presents an original
apparatus for experimental investigations of propellant charges ignition as
well as a developed methodology for measuring flamespreading characteristic
parameters enapling synchronisation of all measuring systems. The
experimental results obtained in the apparatus during base ignition and
ignition by the bayonet primer are presented. The experimental results of
interior ballistic cycles of 100 mm APFSDS rounds obtained in the
experimental gun are also given. The presented methodology enables an
experimental characterisation of ignition process parameters in the phase of
development of new propellant charges or during modifications of existing
propellant charges.
