TENDENCY IN TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS FOR HANDSET ANTENNA Mira Maljković
Abstract The rapidly expanding personal and mobile communications services have called for the development of new antenna design. For optimum system performance, antennas must also have high radiation efficiency, small volume, isotropic radiaton characteristics, simple and low-loss impedance matching to the receiving and transmiting paths, and simple mechanical construction. In order to determine which antenna is appropriate to be used, it is necessary to evaluate the electrical and mechanical characteristics and to assess: - how the antenna will be situated with respect to the overall wireless system package, - effects of the conductive handset chassis, - effects of the plastic casing surrounding the unit, and - effects of the passive lumped elements integrated into the design on the antenna performance. Multipath propagation, i. e. fading caused by interference between multiple signal replicas has imposed the use dual antennas and technological by most contemporary smart antennas. Key words: radio-communications, radio signal, radio set, handset, antenna, monopole antenna, loop antenna, helicoidal antenna, planar antenna, dual antenna, smart antenna.
